How to check if ChatGPT recommends a business.
More customers now ask an AI assistant who to call before they search. Here is how to see whether a business is being recommended, why assistants choose the businesses they do, and what helps a business get named.

How to test it yourself
- 1Write the questions a customer would ask: “best [service] in [city]”, “who should I call for [problem] near me”.
- 2Ask each in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google (look for the AI Overview at the top).
- 3Note whether the business is named, where in the answer, and what is said about it.
- 4Note which competitors are named instead, and which sources Perplexity cites.
- 5Repeat monthly; answers change.
Why AI assistants pick who they pick
- Clear, specific content that answers the question asked
- Consistent name, address and phone across listings
- Reviews: volume, rating and what reviewers say
- Mentions on directories, local news and trusted industry sites
- Structured data that states what the business is and does
How to improve it (GEO and AEO)
- Publish a page for each service, and answer the common questions on it
- Add an FAQ section with FAQPage structured data
- Add Organization and LocalBusiness structured data
- Get listed on the directories assistants cite for your industry
- Earn reviews and real mentions, not just links
Checking it across many businesses
Lexir asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews the customer’s questions for every business it audits, and shows who was named. For an agency, that is one of the clearest gaps to show a prospect.
